Find Your Why: The Secret to Lasting Metabolic Health and Motivation

Lasting behaviour change doesn’t come from willpower alone. Real, sustainable transformation happens when you understand why your health matters to you on a deeply personal level. At Real Life Medicine, we teach that connecting your daily actions to your internal motivation — your why — is one of the strongest predictors of long-term metabolic success.

This concept is supported by Self-Determination Theory, a well-established psychological framework showing that intrinsic motivation — doing something because it aligns with your values and sense of self — is far more powerful than external rewards or pressure.

When your choices reflect your why, healthy behaviours become natural, not forced.

The HBA1C Reminder: A Simple but Powerful Tool

In one of our videos, Dr Mary shares a practice she uses to stay connected to her motivation. It’s simple but incredibly effective: a note above her doorway with the word HBA1C.

This visual reminder works not because it’s decorative, but because it represents a deeply held why. That’s the key to sustaining motivation when life gets busy or challenging.

Here are Five Practical Ways to Stay Connected to Your Why:

1. Write it down and make it visible

Create a physical reminder of what matters most. A note on your mirror, a word on your phone’s screensaver, or a message on your fridge can bring your focus back to your goals. Make it specific: instead of “be healthy,” try “keep my blood sugar balanced so I can travel well into my 70s.”

2. Link your daily habits to your bigger goal

Whenever you choose a healthy meal, go for a walk, or get enough rest, consciously connect that action to your deeper motivation. This mental linking activates your brain’s reward system, making it easier to repeat the behaviour over time.

3. Write a letter from your future self

Imagine yourself at 75 or 80 — strong, well, and doing what you love. What choices did that version of you make each day? This exercise turns your abstract “why” into a vivid, emotionally compelling goal.

4. Revisit your why when motivation fades

Everyone experiences dips in motivation. Anticipate them by recording your why — on paper or in a voice memo — when you’re feeling inspired. Returning to this reminder on low-energy days helps restore your focus and commitment.

5. Share your why with someone you trust

Telling a friend, family member, or supportive community about your why strengthens accountability and connection. Research shows that social support and a sense of belonging amplify intrinsic motivation and help sustain behavioural change over time.

Staying Focused on What Truly Matters

At Real Life Medicine, we teach our patients and members that staying connected to purpose isn’t just a mindset practice — it’s a metabolic health strategy. Whether your goal is reversing insulin resistance, regaining energy, or preventing chronic disease, your why keeps your actions aligned with your values.

Support for Reconnecting with Your Why

Sometimes subconscious blocks can weaken your motivation even when your goals are clear. To help overcome these barriers, Real Life Medicine created the 30-Day Hypnosis for Health Program — a guided resource that helps you shift old patterns, reset your mindset, and reconnect with your inner drive.
